Contemplating the main courtyard and the staircase bearing their name, one is reminded of the decisive role the Thierstein family played in the history of Haut-Kœnigsbourg. A noble family of Swiss origin, the Thiersteins were invested with the castle in 1479 by the Habsburg emperor and undertook a vast renovation: their ambition was not only political, but also military.

The staircase symbolizes this era when the castle became a modern fortress, capable of withstanding new threats thanks to reinforced walls and defensive structures adapted for artillery. When one ascends these steps today, one almost follows in the footsteps of Oswald or Henri de Thierstein, for whom every stone had to have a strategic function.

But their dynasty was not to last: the last count, Henri, died in 1517 without an heir. The castle then returned to the Habsburgs, and the Thierstein line died out shortly afterwards, leaving behind an indelible architectural and symbolic legacy.
