From the ramparts, the view opens onto Place Vauban, a vast paved esplanade nestled in the heart of Saint-Malo's inner city walls. This square is named after the famous military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633–1707), who played a decisive role in the fortification of the coastline during the reign of Louis XIV. Although he never resided in Saint-Malo, his influence was significant: his principles of military architecture largely inspired the network of bastions, curtain walls, and towers that still protect the corsair city from sea assaults and enemies today.

Place Vauban itself has long been a strategic location. In the 18th century, it served as a parade ground and assembly area for troops stationed in the city. Its location, sheltered from the prevailing winds and close to the ramparts, allowed for the rapid mobilization of soldiers in the event of a naval attack. Over time, it has become a living and walking space, lined with beautiful granite facades typical of post-war reconstruction (the city having been heavily bombed in 1944).

Today, Place Vauban provides a peaceful resting place for strollers, contrasting with the bustling shopping streets around it: a discreet reminder of Saint-Malo's original military dimension, hidden beneath the tranquil charm of the restored city.
