Seemingly ordinary when its wings are closed, Kallima paralekta, nicknamed the leaf butterfly, is a master of camouflage. But seen here in close-up, with its wings wide open, it reveals the unexpected splendor of its underside: a burst of electric blue, shot through with bright orange and deep black. A striking, almost theatrical contrast with its bark and veined costume when it folds up.

Native to Southeast Asia, this butterfly plays both cards. When stationary, with its wings closed, it looks like a dead leaf, veins and irregularities included. In flight, or when it feels safe, it displays its bright colors, likely used to ward off or confuse predators.

This instantaneous change in appearance is a formidable example of evolutionary adaptation. It illustrates the extent to which some insects have refined their mimicry to the point of becoming invisible in their environment, while retaining spectacular deterrents.
