It was one of those days when you go out without a specific goal, drawn simply by the soft afternoon light. The path, familiar yet ever-changing, wound between yellowing hedges and clumps of dry grass. And suddenly, on the verge, where the shadows of the trees stretched towards the grass, I saw a veritable little world.

A colony of honey-colored fungi (Armillaria mellea) had taken over a slope, emerging from an invisible trunk or an underground network of dead roots. Huddled together, these warm-hued mushrooms seemed to watch over the path, like a silent army from a fairy tale. Their golden-brown caps, glistening in the low light, formed a natural mosaic, alive and moving.

It is sometimes said that this species is edible, provided it is thoroughly cooked, and only when it can be identified with certainty. But this certainty, precisely, remains the privilege of experienced mycologists—and for others, doubt is a sign of humility.

I left them there, at the edge of the passage, like sentinels watching over this fragment of ordinary nature. A reminder that beauty often emerges where we least expect it.
