I walked slowly, my eyes scanning the ground, attentive to the smallest details. And suddenly, like a burst of fire in the humus, I spotted a small group of bright red shapes nestled on a dead branch, still partially covered with moss.

I'd never seen them before: these fleshy cups with gently curled edges struck me with their almost unreal brilliance. They were most likely Austrian Pezizas (Sarcoscypha austriaca), those discreet but flamboyant mushrooms that sometimes appear in late winter or early spring, like a nod to the life that persists beneath decaying matter.

Their fragile flesh, almost translucent in places, caught the light like a jewel placed there by chance. They are sometimes said to be edible, but of little interest—and some closely related species can be confused.

For me, they will remain a vivid memory of wonder: an unexpected, almost magical encounter, at the bend of a forgotten tree trunk.
