It was a misty morning, where the humidity made every step muffled, almost suspended. Walking along a mossy embankment, my gaze was drawn to a small group of shiny mushrooms, huddled together as if for warmth. Their amber hue and slightly slimy surface evoked pholiota mushrooms, and more specifically Pholiota microspora, a mushroom cultivated in Japan under the name nameko, prized there for its gelatinous texture and mild flavor.

But the forest doesn't always offer certainty. While these specimens share the traits of nameko mushrooms, accurately identifying a mushroom remains a tricky exercise, even for the most knowledgeable.

Some pholiota mushrooms are edible, others potentially poisonous, and confusion between species can be dangerous.

So I chose to leave them there, untouched, mere ephemeral inhabitants of the undergrowth—and me, a mere curious guest, for the time it took to snap a photo.
