Photo Heading for Ponza, the heart of the Ponziane Islands

To conclude this trip to Terracina, we set sail for Ponza, the main island of the Pontine Islands (Isole Pontine), a volcanic archipelago located about 45 km from Terracina. The group includes six islands:

Ponza (the largest and only truly inhabited),
Palmarola, Zannone, and Gavi in the northwest of the group,
Ventotene and Santo Stefano in the southeast.

Ponza serves as a natural access point to the northwest of the archipelago, with its rocky cliffs, fine sandy beaches, and almost secret coves. From the mainland, on a clear day, the Ponziane Archipelago can sometimes be seen on the horizon like a promontory rising from the sea.

As for Ventotene (along with Santo Stefano), it is officially recognized as a state nature reserve and marine protected area—a protected area established in 1997-1999 to safeguard its exceptional biodiversity and marine habitats.
