Among the masterpieces on display at the Sperlonga Museum, this monumental scene depicts one of the most famous episodes from Homer's Odyssey: the blinding of the Cyclops Polyphemus by Odysseus and his companions.

The one-eyed giant, drunk and deceived by Odysseus's ingenuity, is depicted here at the tragic moment when a red-hot stake is driven into his only eye socket. The realism of the tense bodies, the violence of the action frozen in stone, and the dramatic tension of the scene all testify to the sculptural genius of the Rhodian workshops to which these groups are attributed (Agesander, Athenodorus, and Polydorus).

This work, both powerful and moving, illustrates the triumph of human intelligence over blind brutality, a theme dear to Greek mythology - and to the Emperor Tiberius, who would have liked to surround himself with these heroic scenes in his villa overlooking the sea.
