🇫🇷 The Normandie-Niemen Regiment — When France and Russia Fought Side by Side
Founded in 1942 at the initiative of General de Gaulle, the Normandie Fighter Group brought together a handful of Free French pilots eager to continue the fight against Nazi Germany. Sent to the Eastern Front, they joined the Soviet forces and trained on Yakovlev aircraft, notably the Yak-1, then the Yak-3, from which they made the most of their skills.
Their bravery impressed their Russian comrades: in two years, they flew more than 5,200 missions, claimed 273 certified victories, and paid a heavy price, with 42 pilots killed in action. combat.
