In the footsteps of Rome – The Capitolium of Terracina - Photos

Walking leisurely up Corso Anita Garibaldi, as we approach Piazza Municipio, a discreet but fascinating stop is in order on the left: these are the remains of the Capitolium, an ancient temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad—Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva—in Roman times.

Below the current roadway, behind a stone balustrade, broken columns, steps carved into the tufa, and ancient slabs appear: the foundations of what was once a central place for the religious and political life of Roman Terracina.

This Capitolium, contemporary with the Aemilian Forum located a few steps further, is a reminder that Terracina was an important city on the Appian Way, both strategic and prosperous. Today, these remains seem to lie in silence, nestled between modern walls, almost hidden from the prying eyes... but still there, bearing a thousand-year-old memory.

Another suspended moment, where history surfaces at the bend of a simple sidewalk.
