From the Queen's Bastion, above the lacework of the old town's roofs, the slender bell tower of the Chapelle de la Victoire rises up, a slender stone spire silhouetted against the sea sky. This discreet yet symbolic chapel is located in the heart of the city walls, on Place Chateaubriand, and its history is closely linked to the upheavals of the corsair city.

It was erected in 1855 in gratitude to the Virgin Mary, following the cholera epidemic that had struck Saint-Malo a few years earlier. The inhabitants vowed to build a place of worship dedicated to Our Lady of Victory if the city were spared, and when the epidemic subsided, they kept their promise.

In neo-Gothic style, the chapel contrasts with the surrounding solid granite buildings. Its graceful silhouette and pointed bell tower seem to turn the gaze skyward, like a stone prayer suspended above the sea.

Even today, it remains a place of peaceful contemplation amidst the tourist hustle and bustle, and a moving visual landmark when, from the ramparts, it is seen silently watching over the corsair city.
