From the Queen's Bastion, the view opens like a vast history book set against the sea. To the left stands the massive, round Bidouane Tower, once a powder magazine built in the 17th century. Its granite walls, steeped in salt and legend, have withstood fierce winds and the assaults of past enemies. It marks one of the highest points of the rampart and offers yesterday's lookouts—as well as today's strollers—a breathtaking view of the sea.

Following the line of the ramparts, the gaze glides over the rooftops of the walled city, then escapes out to sea to reach the island of Grand Bé, located a stone's throw from the beach. At low tide, a sandy isthmus connects it to the mainland, like a silver thread stretched between two worlds. Here lies François-René de Chateaubriand, a native of Saint-Malo and the father of Romanticism, who wished to be buried facing infinity, "alone, with the sea as his last witness."

This striking panorama unites in a single glance the memory of war, the poetry of the waves, and the breath of the centuries, reminding us that Saint-Malo is at once a fortress, a seafaring city, and a cradle of great writers.
