Lying on the ground, wings spread wide, this Siproeta epaphus, sometimes nicknamed the Brown Calico, seems to blend into the greenhouse paths, as its color palette evokes fallen leaves and the shifting shadows of the forest edge. Its wingspan reveals dark brown forewings crossed by a wide, bright orange band, which contrasts with the hazelnut-colored hindwings, edged in black and finely hemmed. Native to Central and South America, the Siproeta epaphus frequents forest edges, clearings, and the edges of damp paths. When it lands on the ground, it is often to warm itself or feed on fermented juices, demonstrating its intimate connection with the earth and the natural elements.
