It was a fleeting encounter, almost whispered by the forest. From a carpet of soft moss and faded oak leaves, a few small mushrooms rose gracefully. Slender and slender, their slightly ridged, light brown caps hinted at a fragile delicacy. Crouching down to observe more closely, I noticed the reddish tint at the base of their stems, and a dark drop at the break of a damaged specimen.

Everything suggested they might be Red-footed Mushrooms (Mycena haematopus)—those humble, often overlooked mushrooms that ooze a wine-red sap when injured, as if their very heart beat in the dim undergrowth.

Neither particularly sought-after nor dangerous at first glance, they nonetheless remain mysterious: their identification is never entirely certain, and caution is always advised. That day, I just looked at them for a few minutes, then I stepped back gently, like closing the door on a well-kept secret.
