Turning back from this point in the lower bailey, my gaze rose to the final level of the walls protecting the heart of Haut-Kœnigsbourg. From where I stood, these upper defenses appeared as a final barrier of stone, dominating the entire fortress with undeniable authority.

The brilliant light here highlighted the contours of the battlements and the angular lines of the roofs. One could sense the complexity of the defensive architecture: a network of walkways, guard posts, and interconnected walls, all designed to slow down, deflect, or repel an attacker.

Observing these final walls from the dimness of the lower bailey gave the impression of contemplating the threshold of a more intimate, more strategic domain. It was here that the true strength of the castle lay, its heart, protected by centuries of vigilance and military ingenuity.
