Terracina is full of alleys so narrow that one almost hesitates to walk down them as a couple. Barely enough room to squeeze through, these passages seem to have been designed for one walker at a time, forcing one to slow down, step aside, or smile at the person one passes.

Between two centuries-old walls, the light filters in just a little, the air cools, and footsteps echo. One often cannot see either the entrance or the exit: only a few steps, a curve, a patch of sky between the roofs. These stone corridors tell the story of the ancient city, built without superfluity, tightly woven around its history.

It is in these moments of narrowness that Terracina invites one to connect: with its past, with its inhabitants, or sometimes... with a stranger encountered too closely.
