On a slender orchid stem, this Caligo idomeneus, nicknamed the giant owl of Idomeneus, landed with quiet grace, its wings carefully folded. It thus reveals one of the most remarkable subterfuges in the insect kingdom: a large, intimidating bird of prey eye, perfectly defined on each hindwing.

In the semi-darkness of the greenhouse, this camouflage takes on its full meaning: this is no longer a simple tropical butterfly, but a miniature owl mounted on legs, ready to outwit predators with cunning. The brown, bronze, and beige-veined colors perfectly mimic bark or a dead leaf, reinforcing the illusion of solidity and permanence.

Native to the forests of Central and South America, this crepuscular butterfly prefers shade and tranquility. Not inclined to flutter in the bright sunlight, it nevertheless impresses as much by its imposing size as by its motionless, almost sculptural silhouette.
