Discreet yet flamboyant, Cethosia hypsea, also known as the Torch Butterfly, is photographed here with its wings folded, perched on the ground. This butterfly, usually dazzling when revealing its orange-red colors, here plays the reserved card. On its underside, the patterns are more brown, cream, and russet, finely chiseled with white lines reminiscent of plant lace.

This modest posture helps us better understand its camouflage tactic: at rest, it blends in with dead leaves or the forest floor, escaping the prying eyes of predators. It is only in full flight that it reveals the incandescent vibration of its wings, like embers stirred by the wind.

Native to Southeast Asia, Cethosia hypsea is known for its beauty, but also for belonging to a group of butterflies toxic to birds, which means it is often imitated in the wild. Even when stationary, it fascinates with its balance between brilliance and caution, flamboyance and wisdom.
