With its swift and unpredictable flight, the Papilio demoleus flutters into tropical gardens like a moving burst of light. When, by chance, it lands for a moment, we can finally admire the complex pattern of its wings: a sharp contrast between black, cream, and subtle reddish touches toward the rear.

This butterfly is known for its agility in flight, but also for its astonishing adaptability. Native to Asia, it has colonized many regions as far away as Australia and some islands in the Indian Ocean. Its green, stocky caterpillar often develops on citrus trees, sometimes earning it pest status in plantations.

As an adult, the Papilio demoleus is harmless and graceful, particularly fond of brightly colored nectar-producing flowers. Its wings, though less spectacular than those of other long-tailed butterflies, are nonetheless finely veined and dynamic, as if built for speed.
